Student Resources
One of BYU’s four major educational goals is this: scholarly research and creative endeavor among both faculty and students, including those in selected graduate programs of real consequence, are essential and will be encouraged.
The work that you are doing matters, and we are grateful that you are here researching at BYU! As IRB staff, we are here to help make sure that you have everything you need to navigate the approval process so that you can produce research “for the benefit of the world.”
The BYU Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews human research to ensure it is ethical and in compliance with federal regulations. While some classroom activities involving human research are not subject to IRB review, if you are completing a thesis or dissertation with human subjects or human subjects' data, you will likely need to submit an IRB application. The IRB Lifecycle Guide has more information to help you navigate this process.
Anyone listed on an IRB application will need to complete their CITI training. Please complete your CITI training as soon as possible. Your training status reports automatically in OneAegis and is visible to your PI.
OneAegis (OA) is the software platform for submitting all new IRB applications. Use the Login button in the top right and sign in with your BYU credentials. If a PI has added you as a collaborator on a study, it will be listed in your dashboard.
As a student, you can create a new application, but you will need to list a professor as the PI. When you submit an application, it is not finished. Your PI will receive an email that it is completed, and they will need to provide their signature in OneAegis for it to be submitted to the IRB.
Below is a fillable pdf version of the OneAegis application. Use this as a guide to develop questions to bring to your PI. Note: You cannot submit this application in pdf form, you will need to enter the application directly into OneAegis.
This document contains useful tips for filling out an application and can help answer FAQs.

Consultations will be up to 30 minutes long and held over Zoom. We will review your application draft in OneAegis (if applicable) and email you to find a time to meet!
