IRB Information
IRB Information Overview
Brigham Young University IRB consists of one committee which reviews mainly social, behavioral and educational research. The IRB does NOT review studies under the jurisdiction of the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Committee members have various areas of expertise to provide adequate review of research activities commonly conducted at Brigham Young University. The members include scientists, non-scientists, and individuals not affiliated with the University. The unaffiliated member represents the perspective of research subjects when reviewing submissions before the IRB.
Committee Meeting Schedule
After submission, the IRB will determine the appropriate level of review. Complete applications eligible for exempt or expedited review are reviewed on a rolling basis.
Studies requiring full board review must be submitted by the 10th of the month prior to the scheduled meeting. The IRB meets on the first Thursday of each month, with occasional exceptions.
To avoid delays, please plan ahead and submit a complete application well before the deadline to allow adequate time for review.

Become an IRB Member
Serving on the BYU IRB is a meaningful way to support ethical research and contribute to the protection of human subjects across campus. IRB members help ensure that research meets federal and institutional standards while supporting academic inquiry.
Faculty interested in serving are encouraged to speak with their department chair. Nominations are reviewed by the dean and associate deans for research, and final approval is made by the Associate Vice Presidents Council.
We welcome faculty from diverse disciplines and value the insight and experience they bring to the review process.
