Getting Started

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Brigham Young University is part of the University’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) and is responsible for ensuring that research involving human participants is conducted ethically, responsibly, and in compliance with federal regulations, institutional policies, and applicable laws.

If your project involves interacting with people, collecting information about individuals, or using data derived from human participants, IRB review may be required before you begin your research activities. This includes faculty research, student projects, theses and dissertations, collaborative studies, and some forms of secondary data analysis.

The information in this section is designed to guide you through the IRB process—from determining whether IRB review is required, to understanding what type of review may apply, and preparing a complete and compliant submission. These resources are intended to support responsible research planning, reduce delays, and help ensure appropriate protections for research participants throughout the lifecycle of your study.
